Confounding by socioeconomic position remains after adjusting for neighbourhood deprivation: an example using smoking and mortality.

چکیده
A rea based measures of socioeconomic deprivation are often used as proxies for personal socioeconomic position. But sometimes people of high socioeconomic position live in deprived areas, and vice versa. 2 This means that adjusting for area deprivation (only) may leave residual confounding for any exposure-outcome association in which socioeconomic position is strongly implicated. The purpose of this paper is to report an example in which residual confounding by personal socioeconomic position remains after adjusting for neighbourhood deprivation. We are not aware of previous empirical findings. More generally, we also examine the issue of residual confounding by socioeconomic position when adjusting for just one individual socioeconomic factor (education or income) compared with adjusting simultaneously for a large range of socioeconomic factors. Our empirical example is the association of tobacco with adult mortality in a large study that includes multiple measures of personal socioeconomic position.

OBJECTIVE To investigate whether neighbourhood measures of geographical accessibility to outlets selling tobacco (supermarkets, convenience stores and petrol stations) are associated with individual smoking behaviour in New Zealand. BACKGROUND Mortality rates for Māori are twice those for non-Māori in New Zealand. We have assessed the contribution of tobacco smoking and socioeconomic position to these inequalities in 45-74-year-old census respondents during 1981-84 and 1996-99 (2.3 and 2.7 million person-years, respectively). METHODS We used linked census and mortality cohort datasets with measures of socioeconomic posit...
متن کاملContext or composition: How does neighbourhood deprivation impact upon adolescent smoking behaviour?
Neighbourhood effects studies have demonstrated an association between area deprivation and smoking behaviour whereby people living in deprived neighbourhoods are more likely to smoke than those in non-deprived neighbourhoods. This evidence though is based largely upon data that ignores long term exposures to neighbourhood contexts and is confounded by neighbourhood selection bias. In this stud...

BACKGROUND Appropriate dental care is an important part of maintaining good oral health.
